Data sources

The food database ships inside the app. Every row in it carries the name of the source it came from, and the same provenance follows each food into your diary and your export. This page credits those sources, states their licences, and is where the open copy of the database is published.

Open Food Facts

Contains information from Open Food Facts, made available under the Open Database License (ODbL). openfoodfacts.org

Rows559 branded products, looked up by barcode
LicenceOpen Database License 1.0 (database), Database Contents License 1.0 (contents)
SnapshotRetrieved 29 July 2026 from the Open Food Facts API; category tags retrieved 3 August 2026
Not includedImages. The app never downloads an Open Food Facts image.

A barcode the bundled database does not know is looked up live on Open Food Facts when you scan it. That product is cached on your phone and is not part of the bundled database.

USDA FoodData Central

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central. USDA data is a work of the United States Government and is in the public domain; no licence obligations attach.

Data setRowsRelease
Foundation Foods428 foods30 April 2026
SR Legacy7,793 foodsApril 2018
FNDDS (survey foods)5,431 foods31 October 2024

All three were pinned on 29 July 2026 and downloaded directly from FoodData Central. They did not arrive through Open Food Facts.

Setpoint's own content

The exercise library (52 exercises), the three program templates and the twelve habits were written for the app. Program templates are described generically, as set, rep and progression schemes, and reference no trademarked program. The food categories (the pantry shelves) are the app's own grouping of the sources above. None of this is user data: your custom foods, recipes, exercises and habits stay in your own store on your phone and are never part of the published database.

The open copy of the database

The bundled food database combines the Open Food Facts subset with the USDA data sets, so the combined database is offered under the Open Database License 1.0. It is published as plain files, with no technical restriction on access, so you do not need the app to read it:

FileWhat it holds
data.csvOne row per food, every column, UTF-8. USDA rows are below id 10,000,000, Open Food Facts rows at or above it.
portions.csvThe household measures (cups, tablespoons, pieces) with their weights, one row per portion.
schema.mdEvery column, its type and its units.
ATTRIBUTION.mdThe sources above, their licences and snapshot dates.
LICENSE.txtThe Open Database License 1.0 in full.
CHECKSUMS.txtsha256 of each file.

Each release of the database is versioned with the app release that bundles it and is built by one script in the open from the same snapshots the app uses, so the published copy and the shipped copy are the same data.

The first release is being prepared and will be linked here with its checksums.

In the app

The same attribution is in the app under Settings → About & Licenses → Data sources, generated from the bundle actually installed, so the counts there follow any database update you install.
